"The Legends of May" (LAST film): 'Scarlet Sails'

You still have a chance to get acquainted with Russian fairy tales and legends! 


The last week of May we watch the most ROMANTIC fairy tale, the LAST film of 'The Legends of May" in RLC.

Tuesday, 31 May, 7.30 pm - Scarlet Sails (‘Алые паруса’) 

All films run with English subtitles and start at 7.30 pm.

Scarlet Sails (‘Алые паруса’) is based on Alexander Grin's adventure novel.

The story is a romantic fantasy and is described as a "fairy tale", though it contains no overtly supernatural elements. The setting is a small fishing village. The former seaman Longren raises his daughter Assol alone after losing his beloved wife, making a meager living by selling the toy boats he carves from wood. As a child, Assol encounters an old man who claims to be a wizard and promises the girl that one day a prince will come on a ship with scarlet sails to carry her away. The villagers scoff but Assol believes her dream will come true one day.

An Ordinary Miracle (Обыкновенное чудо) is a Soviet 1978 musical film, a love story by Mark Zakharov based on a play by Yevgeni Shvarts. Leonid Serebrennikov performed the main theme in the film ("Nelepo, smeshno, bezrassudno, bezumno, volshebno.."). Composer - Gennadi Gladkov. Lyrics by Yuli Kim.

Главный герой фильма Волшебник (Олег Янковский), который, чтобы развлечь себя и свою жену (Ирина Купченко), выдумывает сказки. Герои сказок оживают, приходят в его дом и начинают жить своей жизнью. Очередная сказка получалась очень грустной...

10 May, Tuesday, 7.30 pm -  'Christmas Eve' ("Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки")

'Christmas Eve' ("Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки") is a 1961 Soviet film directed byAleksandr Rou based on a collection of short stories, Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, by Nikolai Gogol.

Action is developed on the eve of Christmas in Malorussia (so in olden time in Russia named Ukraine), in village Dikanka. There live smith Vakula, mother of its Solokha - a witch who likes to fly on a broom, the rich Cossack Chub (the Forelock) with the daughter - beauty Oksana whom Vakula wishes to marry, and more many kind and bad people.

Экранизация повести Николая Васильевича Гоголя «Ночь перед Рождеством» из цикла «Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки» поставлена «мастером киносказки» Александром Роу. Разыгрывается сказочная история, произошедшая на хуторе близ Диканьки в ночь перед Рождеством, когда кузнец Вакула, оседлав чёрта, привёз своей любимой Оксане «черевички» царицы из самой столицы — Санкт-Петербурга.

We are happy to start a month of fairy tales at the Russian Language Center, or "The Legends of May". 

3 May, Tuesday, 7.30 pm - Jack Frost (‘Морозко’)

Jack Frost (‘Морозко’) is a traditional Russian fairy tale. It was directed by legendary fairy tale director Aleksandr Rou.

Once upon a time there was a lovely kind girl Nastenka who was despised by her stepmother. Once she decided to get rid off her step-daughter and to leave Nastenka in a winter forest. There was also a nice young man Ivan who fell in love with Nastenka, but as he was a great boaster and egoist, he was turned into a bear by an old magician. Both Nastenka and Ivan have to overcome a lot till the day when they could be happy together. And it was kind Jack Frost who helped them.

СЮЖЕТ 

Жила-была хорошая добрая девушка Настенька. Злая мачеха заставляла её работать, не давая продыху. Однажды она решила избавиться от падчерицы и отправила ту замерзать в зимний лес. В этих же краях жил паренёк Иван. Он полюбил Настеньку, да вот только был он большим хвастуном, потому лесной колдун и превратил его в медведя. И Настеньке, и Ивану пришлось пройти через много испытаний, прежде чем соединить свои судьбы. И помог им в этом добрый волшебник — дедушка Морозно.

Награды и отзывы

• Много лет в Чехословакии, теперь — в Чехии, эту сказку показывают по телевидению на Новый год, она стала своего рода культом новогоднего праздника, примерно как в России фильм Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром!. Есть сорт мороженого «Морозко» (по-чешски «Mrazík»).
• В 1965, фильм получил приз «Золотой лев св. Марка» на XVII Международном кинофестивале детских и юношеских фильмов в Венеции.
• Стивен Спилберг уверяет, что фильм «Морозко» был предтечей многих киношедевров Голивуда.
• Фильм «Морозко» получил от Консультативного совета по кинематографии США награду Award of Excellence за лучший киносценарий для семейного просмотра.
