Coco Chanel and 'Slavic charm'


Габриэль Шанель: «Кто-то сказал, что «в жизни каждой женщины должен быть румын». Я бы добавила, что любая уроженка стран Запада должна сделать всё возможное, чтобы понять, что же такое «славянский шарм». Я была просто очарована русскими. Их вечное «все моё – это твоё» просто опьяняет. Все славяне обладают какими-то удивительными отличительными чертами, оставаясь при этом абсолютно естественными, и даже самый скромный из них не выглядит обычным».

Une petite anecdote plus amusante :
En 1920, le grand-duc Dimitri, cousin du tsar Nicolas II, fait la connaissance de Coco Chanel et en tombe amoureux. C’est réciproque et leur passion va durer plusieurs années, jusqu’au mariage de Dimitri avec une riche américaine, ce qui rend Coco Chanel furieuse. Le grand-duc n’a sûrement pas eu beaucoup de mal à séduire mademoiselle Chanel car voici ce qu’elle écrit :
" Tout occidental doit avoir succombé au « charme slave » pour savoir ce que c’est. Tous les slaves sont distingués, naturels, et les plus humbles ne sont jamais communs."
Donc, en 1920, Coco Chanel vient d’acheter une petite Rolls bleue et elle propose à Dimitri de partir à Monte-Carlo. Au cours de leur voyage, Dimitri décide d’aller à GRASSE pour présenter Ernest Beaux à Coco Chanel. Ernest Beaux, un des meilleurs parfumeur au monde, était le parfumeur de la Cour de Russie. C’était là que le grand-duc Dimitri l’a connu. Après la révolution, il est venu s’établir à Grasse. Ernest Beaux présente à Coco Chanel quelques échantillons dans des petites fioles avec des
étiquettes : n° 1, n°2. n° 3, n°4, n°5. et c’est la cinquième fiole qu’elle choisit. Elle décide de garder le numéro de l’étiquette et c’est ainsi qu’est né le N° 5 de Channel.
Le grand-duc Dimitri a dessiné le flacon en s’inspirant des flasques de vodka que tout officier emportait avec lui. C’est donc à un grand-duc russe que vous devez, Mesdames, le fameux N°5 de Chanel !

Ах, Александр Сергеевич, милый .... (с) or Pushkin's Birthday

Today, on the 6th of June ,we celebrate Alexander Pushkin's birthday. Only lazy one didn't mention it today in his account anywhere. This just proves that Pushkin is indeed "наше все" - 'our everything', as we use to call him now, following the phase of some critic.

Indeed, if you ask many interesting and talented professors in Russia 'who is your favourite writer', many of them will say 'Pushkin...', and that is of course not because they didn't read anything else! Pushkin is indeed greatest poet and a real treasure of Russian literature

Let's see why. Let's read the quotations about Pushkin by the writers and critics of his time  - here we will find interesting facts about him

When I think about Pushkin, I immediately think of the idea of ​​the Russian national poet. In fact, none of our poets is above him. Pushkin is a phenomenon, unique phenomenon of the Russian spirit: he is a Russian man in his development, as he might be in two hundred years. It is difficult to estimate the contribution of  Pushkin in the formation of Russian literature and Russian language. This is already the undisputed truth, and confirmed by a wide variety of studies.



Russian literature and Russian language is constantly experiencing the impact of the political situation in the country. Depending on who rules a great power, began to set up their own rules and regulations that speak about how to write or say what books will be sold and which will fall under the ban. Language  assimilated, feeling the impact of popular dialects, as well as European language. Gradually, language and literature acquired properties of other cultural traditions that took root in Russia, but all were strange.
 Everything has changed since then, as the literary arena joined Alexander Pushkin. In his works, the author uses the popular lexicon. Despite the fact that he is considered a good connoisseur of French language, is widely established in various areas, Pushkin refers specifically to the people's speech, using specific words or concepts. Thus, he brings in a whole new language of communication elements that have been forgotten or replaced by a foreign vocabulary. Pushkin understood that the Russian language - is primarily a national treasure, and however  it had been changed and distorted by the great minds of his time, ordinary people will still speak the national language – same that had been used by their ancestors.

 In addition, the author introduces the language of a large variety of beautiful epithets and metaphors. He imbues his works phraseology and expressive epithets, the writer tries his readers not think straight, and try to see the image and beauty of language and words denoting the usual subject and ordinary action. The literary language of Pushkin became a classic of Russian language, which was later followed by other writers.
Pushkin was the first Russian writer who began to make experiments with the stylistic orientation of the text. He never followed the strict framework of genre when writing texts. Pushkin is more appealing to the notion of style, highlighting the common features of it, playing with it, creating a unique product. In addition, Pushkin laid the foundation of a new stylistic direction in Russia - realism. All the writer's works are multi-faceted and diverse.

Reading Pushkin, you hear his voice. He was the first poet who destroyed the image of a convention of copyright: in "Ruslan and Lyudmila," "Eugene Onegin", Pushkin speaks to the reader "on an equal footing", as it is between close friends, all grasping at a glance

The merits of Pushkin for Russia are  great and worth getting national recognition. He gave a final transormation to our language, which is now by its richness, power, logic and beauty of form is recognized even by foreign philologists as almost the first after the ancient Greek.  He was the first, who finally hoisted the banner of poetry, deep in the Russian land by the mighty hand...

Happy Birthday, Andrei Arsenyevich!



The 4th of April is a birthday of the Soviet film director and screenwriter Andrei Tarkovsky.
The son of a famous Russian poet Arseny Tarkovsky, he was born in the village of Ivanovo region. In 1951-1952 he studied Arabic at the Department of Middle East Department of the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, then, in 1952-1953, he worked at the Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals and Gold, he worked in geological parties.
International fame came to him after the film - "Ivan's Childhood". This film got many prestigious film awards, including the "Golden Lion of St. Mark" Venice Film Festival.
In the future, all the pictures Tarkovsky became notable events of cultural life in the country, affecting the spiritual development of society. The film "Andrei Rublev" (1971) with Anatoly Solonitsyn in the title role was included into the list  'the 100 best films in the history of the cinema'. 




Tarkovsky's films are characterised by metaphysical themes, extremely long takes, and memorable images of exceptional beauty. Recurring motifs are dreams, memory, childhood, running water accompanied by fire, rain indoors, reflections, levitation, and characters re-appearing in the foreground of long panning movements of the camera. He once said, “Juxtaposing a person with an environment that is boundless, collating him with a countless number of people passing by close to him and far away, relating a person to the whole world, that is the meaning of cinema.”
Tarkovsky included levitation scenes into several of his films, most notably Solaris. To him these scenes possess great power and are used for their photogenic value and magical inexplicability.[22]
Water, clouds, and reflections were used by him for its surreal beauty and photogenic value, as well as its symbolism, such as waves or the form of brooks or running water.[23]
Bells and candles are also frequent symbols. These are symbols of film, sight and sound, and Tarkovsky's film frequently has themes of self reflection.
Tarkovsky developed a theory of cinema that he called "sculpting in time". By this he meant that the unique characteristic of cinema as a medium was to take our experience of time and alter it. Unedited movie footage transcribes time in real time. By using long takes and few cuts in his films, he aimed to give the viewers a sense of time passing, time lost, and the relationship of one moment in time to another.
